New Records of Powdery Mildews from Taiwan: Erysiphe ipomoeae comb. nov., E. aff. betae on Buckwheat, and E. neolycopersici comb. nov. on Cardiospermum halicacabum

Erysiphe is the largest genus of powdery mildews (PMs), a group obligate plant pathogenic fungi. Exploration biodiversity generally relies on regional surveys and our aim to investigate PMs in Taiwan. Collections fungi five species around agricultural environments were subjected morphological molecular characterization, using both internal transcribed spacer (ITS) β-tubulin gene (TUB2) regions for phylogenetic analyses. Erysipheipomoeae comb. nov., able infect Ipomoea obscura I. aquatica demonstrated by pathogenicity tests, has been neotypified. The two buckwheat species, Fagopyrum esculentum F. tataricum, are found be hosts E. aff. betae. These results suggest that some families can infected more than one pathogen, e.g., Convolvulaceae ipomoeae convolvuli Polygonaceae polygoni betae, respectively. In addition, analyses Cardiospermum halicacabum tomato belonging aquilegiae complex allocated under neolycopersici nov. This extends potential host range family Sapindaceae. We conclude awareness associations potentially benefit crop disease management.
